Wallan Tennis Courts Lighting Upgrade

Street Lighting Design

Public Lighting Design was engaged by Mitchell Shire Council to prepare an IFC lighting design and upgrade of the Wallan Tennis Court, a key sporting facility in the region. The project aimed to enhance safety, improve lighting performance, and encourage greater community participation by delivering a modern, energy-efficient lighting solution.

The project began with a comprehensive site assessment, where the existing lighting infrastructure was surveyed and evaluated using specialised tools to determine pole positioning, mounting heights, and luminaire conditions. Opportunities for lighting upgrades were identified, ensuring the new design would optimise visibility and meet performance standards while minimising obtrusive light impact on surrounding areas.

A lighting design was developed in compliance with AS 2560.2:2021 (Sports Lighting 2.11 ‘Outdoor Tennis’), ensuring the courts met the required lux levels for recreational and competitive play. The design also included an obtrusive light assessment in accordance with AS/NZS 4282:2019, controlling any potential light spill beyond the court boundaries. The solution involved upgrading all existing luminaires to high-performance LED floodlights, significantly improving energy efficiency and light quality while retaining the existing poles to reduce unnecessary infrastructure costs.

Public Lighting Design provided detailed documentation to Mitchell Shire Council, enabling them to prepare a tender package for the construction and upgrade of the lighting system. Following project completion, Public Lighting Design conducted a lux level audit to verify that the installed lighting met the design specifications and Australian Standards, ensuring the courts were safe, compliant, and optimised for community use.
