Public Lighting Design was engaged by Glen Eira City Council to conduct a feasibility study assessing pedestrian lighting across multiple locations within the municipality. The goal was to identify lighting deficiencies and provide a strategic approach for upgrades that improve safety, visibility, and accessibility in line with Australian Standards (AS/NZS 1158).
Our Approach
PLD carried out site investigations across key pedestrian routes, identifying areas with poor illumination, inconsistent coverage, and infrastructure limitations. The team assessed existing light levels, mapped pole and fitting positions, and documented site-specific challenges including obstructions and uneven lighting distribution.
The study focused on providing practical and cost-effective improvements to enhance lighting consistency and overall performance. This included recommending:
- Replacement of underperforming fittings with energy-efficient LED luminaires
- Optimised pole spacing and heights to improve uniformity
- Upgrades to achieve minimum lux levels for high-use pedestrian pathways
Outcomes
The feasibility study provided Glen Eira City Council with a clear and actionable roadmap to enhance pedestrian lighting across the municipality. PLD’s recommendations support improved community safety, better wayfinding, and more inclusive public spaces through well-lit pedestrian environments.
