Public Lighting Design

Public Lighting Design was engaged by Moorabool Shire Council to conduct a comprehensive lighting audit across four key public parks—Maddingley Park, Masons Lane Reserve, Gordon Recreation Reserve, and Mt Egerton Football Ground Reserve. The project was initiated to enhance safety and security for women and other community members accessing these spaces after dark.

Moorabool Shire Council sought to improve visibility, accessibility, and public safety in its parks by assessing the effectiveness of existing lighting infrastructure. A key focus was identifying dark spots, insufficient illumination, and outdated technology that could contribute to safety concerns. Additionally, the council aimed to explore energy-efficient upgrades that would enhance lighting quality while minimising long-term operational costs.

Public Lighting Design conducted a detailed site assessment, evaluating existing infrastructure, including luminaire types, pole locations, mounting heights, and system condition. A lighting performance audit was carried out across pedestrian pathways, car parks, and key gathering areas to determine whether the existing illumination met recommended safety and visibility standards. Considerations included light levels, uniformity, glare control, and colour rendering, ensuring that the lighting provided a safe and comfortable nighttime environment.

Based on the findings, Public Lighting Design provided targeted improvement strategies to enhance safety and visibility. Recommendations included replacing outdated luminaires with energy-efficient LED technology, improving pathway lighting for safer pedestrian access, optimising car park and entry-point illumination to enhance security, and adjusting pole placement to ensure even light distribution.

The final deliverable was a detailed audit report, outlining findings, proposed solutions, and cost estimates for future lighting upgrades. These recommendations will support Moorabool Shire Council in creating safer, more accessible public spaces, encouraging greater community use after dark while ensuring lighting remains energy-efficient and cost-effective in the long term.
