Public Lighting Design was commissioned by AIE to develop comprehensive electrical and lighting plans for the $187 million Port Hedland Marina—a landmark project set to transform the town’s west end into a thriving cultural and social hub. The marina, owned and operated by the Pilbara Port Authority, is designed to enhance recreational and commercial activity while preserving the region’s unique environmental features.

Merging functionality with environmental responsibility was a key challenge for the project. Port Hedland’s coastline is a known nesting ground for flatback turtles, meaning that traditional lighting solutions could disrupt their natural behaviors. To address this, Public Lighting Design developed a turtle-friendly lighting strategy that minimised sky glow and light spill while maintaining public safety.

The lighting design incorporated directional LED fixtures that provide focused illumination while limiting disruption to wildlife. Amber-coloured LED technology was selected to ensure minimal impact on turtle hatchlings, as it reduces disorientation risks associated with cooler-toned lights. To integrate into the marina’s aesthetic, lighting was incorporated into handrails and service pillars, ensuring visibility while preserving the natural ambiance. Marine-grade fittings were also specified to withstand the harsh coastal environment, ensuring longevity and minimal maintenance.

The final lighting solution achieves a balance between safety, functionality, and ecological conservation, supporting the marina’s vision as a world-class community and tourism destination. Once completed, the marina will enhance public access to the waterfront, encourage recreation and tourism, and support economic growth, all while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability.
